I read a number of books on Northern Cyprus such as “Northern Cyprus” written by John Goulding and Margaret Goulding and “North Cyprus” by Brian Anderson and “Northern Cyprus” by Kristina Gursoy and Lavinia Neville Smith. Another interesting and pretty much intriguing book that I which read on Northern Cyprus was “Northern Cyprus: A traveller’s Guide” by Eileen Davey. The purpose of me reading all those books was to gather some information about this island. I wanted to know about the history of the island as well.

Books I read on Northern Cyprus

When I was looking for some interesting books on Northern Cyprus to gain some information about the island, I came a across a number of books which I should talk of here. The first and the most interesting book that which I came across in the beginning or which deal with the life at Northern Cyprus was: “Bitter Lemons”. It was a book written by a British writer. His name was “Lawrence Durrell” (I knew about the book from the beginning itself because it was the book which I read when I was at the school in UK. The book was actually suggested by one of my teachers who wanted me to know something about what Durrell’s way of writing is. His book became a subject for me later...).

I can say here that the book was about Northern Cyprus. The book was talking a little about Mr. Durrell’s time on the island, (if I am not wrong then it was all about how he was attracted to living there on the island: North Cyprus and how he used to spend his days there, how the Cypriots were etc. It was a book where in was some comic and some seriousness. It was really a perfect blend of happiness and some sadness. It clearly charted out the experiences of Mr. Durrell on the island. He talked about the people he met there and the village he was staying at. (It was Bellapais. The village really is worth visiting).

The book was really an intriguing one as it occupied my attention from the beginning to the end. Since my school days, I have been reading books and books on tourist cities because I am just so very attracted to know what we have here on this beautiful planet earth that which can give pleasurably a soulful experience.

First a bit about me as a traveller:

I am a traveller who likes to go to newer places all the time. The world we live in is really a place to see. There are so many beautiful places here. Since two years I have been forcing my friends to accompany me on one of my tours but they had no time. Just recently, a month back I contacted them and managed to persuade them to come with me.

At the restaurant:

We had a meeting at the restaurant. And over dinner we discussed where to go. We had so many options. One of our fellow friends suggested that there can be no good place than Beijing in china. My other friend suggested that there can be no good place to see than Cairo in Egypt. Well, both of my friends suggested their viewpoint about those two places. We were really in dilemma. Our purpose to be on special holidays was to lead an adventurous life, at least for a few days. To fulfil such a purpose we wanted to be in a place which can present to us a challenge at every step.

Talk on Northern Cyprus by a stranger who joined us:

“A year back, I was on an island called North Cyprus.” A person, sitting at the table next to ours, started speaking to us. We were shocked whether he was really talking to us. We looked in his direction. A friend of mine, Joseph Pereira, asked him with eyes narrowing at him. “Are you talking to us?”

The man in the grey suit with a bow tie, a little stubble on his face told yes. Before we could divert our attention from his talk, he requested us whether he could join us at the table. We couldn’t deny that. He sat there just opposite to me and drinking his beer, started talking to us. “A year back I was in Famagusta in Northern Cyprus. It was an island which I love to be even now. I heard you people were talking, deciding where to go to for holidays. As I had a wonderful experience there in Northern Cyprus so I thought why not suggest this to you all guys,” he abruptly stopped here and asked the waiter to bring another glass of beer for him and asked us to whether we would also like to have (we kindly denied).

He continued talking again, bragging about what he had done there on the island and how his small sons enjoyed there etc. Intrigued by his explanation, (on a historical monument by the name: Famagusta Castle) I began to focus more on his words. In fact, I wanted to ask him whether the island is only known for just historical importance or are there any other things that can attract the visitors?  I was about to ask the same thing but, he, as if had sensed that, started saying this to all that the island is not just known for its historical monuments but there are a lot of things one can find. He said to us that the beaches in Northern Cyprus, especially beaches in Famagusta and beaches in Kyrenia, were really good. He told us that he had seen whole of the island but still there is a thirst in him to go there and be there forever. He further told us that his holidays in Northern Cyprus were really enjoyable and were something that he couldn’t forget all his life.

“I had very little budget and my wife and my small children, porter and jimmy were just so excited to be somewhere for their holidays,” he stopped here and looked at us. His talk was endless. He was just saying one thing or the other. He was just unstoppable. Perhaps, he wanted not to stop. It doesn’t mean that we were getting bored. No, we were not getting bored. We were all ears. We were listening to him with utmost attention, displaying our eagerness.

I have never felt like how I felt when I was in Northern Cyprus for my beach holidays.

It is true that the destination for your holidays (whether annual holidays during summer season or any other season like winter) should be selected with open eyes. Inexplicable beauty and historism

Nothing can be explained in few bunches of the words. It will really take volume if I here go on writing eulogizing about the island, its beauty, its history, its people, its ways, tradition and culture etc.

We were a team of five people. All of us are the best of the friends. We had been to many islands, had been to many cities in China, US, Germany, Italy etc but it was for the time that we were on this small island: North Cyprus holidays. To be frank, when Johnny, our little master, jack of all trades, told us about this island then we thought it would not be good to go as this seems to be an island of very small size so definitely there will not be anything to admire or look at. But we were wrong. Johnny started explaining about what we can do there, where we can go and what all the things that make this island, how everything is etc….

Getting ready for beach holidays in North Cyprus

The way he described the place was really awesome. We were all just intoxicated by his manner of explanation. When I asked him how he came to know so much so about the island then he told me that his father’s brother resides there. We didn't have to find any Cyprus hotel because we stayed in Mr. Chapel’s House. We stayed at his uncle’s house even though there were many Northern Cyprus hotels.

Staying in the hotel was not necessary. In fact, we didn't stay in the hotel because Johnny’s father was kind enough to invite us to his home. He was the owner of the villa property near the Kyrenia village that is Bellapais. We were really happy that we didn't have to look for a hotel there. Even though it seemed to be easier to find a hotel in Kyrenia or a hotel in Famagusta yet we didn't have to apply efforts for the same as we found shelter …..

Northern Cyprus holidays

Northern Cyprus is really a place to be visited. It is a wonderful place which is just suitable for any kind of tourists. No mater whether you are a historian or a naturalist or any one who is interested in the animal life or the one who is a beach holiday lover etc. There is everything for everyone here on this island.

We visited not just beaches but went to the most charmingly fascinating and intriguingly beautiful historical places such as Five Finger Mountains, Famagusta Walls, Royal Tombs, Othello Castle, Nestorian Church, Salamis, Venetian Palace, Kyrenia Castle, Shipwrek Museum Kirsokova etc.

This village, Bellapais Abbey was itself a place of historical background. We were told a number of things about this abbey, the monastic life, the ritual and customs etc. Listening to all those stories from his uncle and from many other elder people there, I was bit lost in the past life here. That made me to go to the libraries and find the treasure there in the books about these places. I read a lot about the history of the places like Karpas peninsula, Famagusta, Kyrenia, Nicosia etc…. Each place seems to be a distinctly small island within the island with its own history and culture.

Holidays Cyprus

We never dreamt that our time in Cyprus would just go away in a wink. We stayed there for whole two weeks but it seemed like a day to us there for we were so very busy in going about various places that we didn't even keep the track of the days. Days just rolled by. One after the other and one after the other and finally the day of our departure arrived. We had to bid adieu to this beautiful place, to the handsomest uncle of my friend Johnny and to his the beaches which were our friends….
